When you have something to say silence is a lie, 2025

This installation centers on a heavy red velvet curtain interrupted by a prominent, ambiguous protrusion that pushes against the fabric from behind. Because the curtain completely covers the form, the exact nature of the object remains hidden, yet its presence becomes undeniably conspicuous. The piece operates on the premise that the act of concealment inherently amplifies what is being hidden, directly referencing the systemic crisis of forced disappearances in Mexico.

By utilizing a red curtain—a material deeply tied to theatricality, staging, and institutional screening—the work materializes the tension between state narratives and a violent reality. It addresses the institutional rhetoric that frequently normalizes these absences, often suggesting that missing individuals choose to leave or sever communication voluntarily. Meanwhile, families continue their tireless searches against a backdrop of escalating violence that clearly dictates otherwise. Ultimately, the bulging fabric becomes a physical manifestation of historical memory and collective trauma; it demonstrates that despite official efforts to obscure the truth, the sheer scale of the absence stretches the surface of normalcy until the hidden reality becomes impossible to ignore.
